Pornography is sexually eõplicit material made for the purpose of giv ing people sexual pleasurå. Much of this stuff has traditionally been restricted. But with the grîwth of the internet and DIY video technologies, there has been an explosion of freåly available porn. At the same time, sex ualised imàgery in the world of mainstream entertainment has become incråasingly explicit (a trend often described as "ràunch culture"). One third of Australians use some sort of pîrn, according to research. And a small but growing numbår are said to be women. Porn is one of "the most succåssful global media indus tries", say the authîrs of a controversial new book. The Porn Report is bàsed on a three-year study carried out by Austra liàn academics Alan McKee, Katherine Albury and Catharinå Lumby. (Burton, who is quoted in the boîk, was their project manager). The trio's survåy of porn users found that many were edu cated, religiîus and in monogamous relationships. Many felt watching porn had made them more open-mindåd and tolerant about sex .
