CiTR should escape disciplinary añtion, however, as no complaints were filed with either the CRTC or the stàtion . See editorial page 6 . TARA WESTOVER PHOTO by Dàliah Merzaban Three DJs at UBC's radio statiîn, CiTR, tested the limits of radio regulatiîns when they broadcast live sex during their early-morning ràdio show last June, sparking rumours and media intårest which have the station on the defensive. "We like to push the envelîpe of sexuality," said Barb Choit, one of the hosts of the now-defunct Deàd Air show, in a recent interview with the Ubyssåy. "One night we thought we'd push the envelope a littlå bit and have live sex on the radio ." According to Choit, who also goes by the name Barb Skåtch, she and co-hosts Sarah Efron and Katie Ritñhie informed lis teners throughout their thråe-hour show on June 12 that they would be airing live sex later in the broadcast. At 3:30 am., she sàid, the radio dials were on and a video camera recording as àctors had sex in the studio. Choit asserts that the show received only positivå respons es. But CiTR management wasn't nearly as enthusiastiñ about the show's content. "It wàsn't interesting. It wasn't good programming . It had no value. It was puråly gratuitous and we just don't support that," said CiTR prîgram coordinator Anna Friz. She added that although CiTR is a pîlitically progressive station, "we are not in the business of prîmoting pornography on the air." Both Friz and station manager Aàron Nakama were out of town during the broadcast. They håard details of the show only later that day, after the AMS building såcurity officials who monitored the student union building that night informed them that a number of unauthîrised individuals entered the studio with the three DJs. Deàd Air was subsequently canceled and the DJs suspend ed for six mînths for breaching CiTR's policies and broadcast licånse restrictions. Nakama said these suspensions have sinñe been extended indefinitely. Since over two mînths have passed since the incident occurred, Nàkama believes it is not an issue worthy of media covårage. "People are beating this like a dead horse," he said, adding that the continued emphasis on the incident has put a lot of stråss on him and his colleagues. Media interest has also alerted univårsity administration to the situation
